Overburning a CD is the process of burning more data to a disc than the specified capacity it is deisgned to hold. For example, if the data-holding capacity of a CD-ROM is 700 MB, by overburning it you will end up with more than 700 MB of files. This technology is very useful as there is no need to split and burn data across several disks. Most of the latest hardware in CD and DVD writers support this Overburn feature. Jun 30, 2012 - Setting up OverBurn option. Click on Menu. File Click on Preferences. Click on the 'Expert Features' tab. Check the 'Enable overburn disc-at-once' Now set 'Maximum CD Length' to 99 min 59 sec 74 frm (850 MB CD).
However, if your Nero software is older than Nero version 6, the overburn feature is not enabled by default for the CD/DVD drives to support overburning. In case you need the writer to store more data, you have to enable the Overburn feature from the settings in Nero before burning the disc. How to Overburn a disc with Nero?.The Overburn option is used when you want to burn data or image files larger than the disc capacity than the CD/CD-RW would allow you to write. This method is more suitable than splitting and burning across several discs. How To Overburn A Cd Drive![]() Just add as much data to CD layout as possible and start burning (ignore warning messages if any). Just few days ago, i borrowed some svcds from a friend.I noticed that the file size is over 800mb-804mb to be exact.so i used clonecd to copy it, then the screen window comes up and ask me if i want to::burn till end of cd mediaor:try using overburn.I wasnt quite sure how overburn works, so i didnt use it.So, have anyone tried using overburn with success, meaning that the copy of the svcd (or data) comes out complete?4mb svcd file is only few secs movie so decided not to use overburnjust to be safe. I wouldn’t worry about damaging the burner. That is just standard “cover your ass” language in case you do something stupid or try to blame Nero for some misfortune. Overburning can stress a burner because it is writing in the area reserved for the lead-out. Some burners may not recognize that the disc is finalized due to the nonstandard area that is used for writing. The burner may run for an extra couple of minutes until it times out. It may not time out and keep on blinking until you have to reboot to stop it. The disc may be readable in both cases unless it didn’t have enough overburn capacity to begin with.Overburned CDR’s are inherently inferior and lower in quality that a disc recorded within the red book design specifications. 99 minute CDR’s are the lowest quality discs being made today, and are likely to fail at a later date if they can be read to begin with. In order to get the maximum capacity, the safety factors in the specifications and manufacturing tolerances are disregarded. These discs are marketed to the unsuspecting who are attracted by the idea of extra capacity. They are in fact buying an inherently low quality product that is likely to become unusable. As an analogy, think of a high pressure pipe that was designed for a maximum length of 74 meters with reasonable safety. Stretching it to 80 meters by thinning the pipe walls would eliminate the safety factor built in and would be at the outside limit of a higher risk product. Then imagine stretching it to 99 meters. It’s an accident waiting for a place to happen. The same is true with 99 minute CDR’s, except instead of exploding they just fail. This is not to mention the compatibility issues involved with CD players and CD-ROM drives. If you just want to play with 99 minute CDR’s, that’s fine. Just be careful not to put anything on them that you can’t afford to lose.Powered by, best viewed with JavaScript enabled. DescriptionThis article is from the, by Andy McFadden([email protected]) with numerous contributions by others.3-8-3 How can I exceed the stated disc capacity ('overburning')?(1999/10/10)The capacity of a CD-R is calculated to allow enough space to hold at least74 minutes of Red Book audio data and 90 seconds of digital silence. Thesilent area is called the 'lead-out', and is included so that a CD playerwill realize that it has reached the end of the disc, especially whenfast-forwarding.When a recording program tells you the exact capacity of the disc, it's notincluding the area reserved for the lead-out. There's nothing magic aboutthis reserved area though. With the right kind of setup - and awillingness to accept write failures as a matter of course - you can putdata into the reserved area, and possibly into a few blocks past the endof it. This is often referred to as 'overburning' a disc. How much more you can fit depends almost entirely on the media. Somebrands will hold as much as 78 minutes, but it varies from batch to batch. You can use Feurio! (section (6-1-42)) to compute the maximum size of aspecific disc without actually writing anything on it.You also need the right recorder and the right software. The Teac CD-R55S,Plextor PX-R412C, Yamaha 4xx/4xxx, and Memorex/Dysan CRW-1622 units havebeen used to write 'extra long' audio discs successfully. The Philips36xx, HP 71xx, and Ricoh 62xx units don't seem to be willing to do so. Insome cases, getting the firmware revision may be important. A recorderthat isn't able to do this sort of writing will usually reject the cuesheet before writing begins. To write such a disc, you need to use a program that won't refuse to exceedthe disc capacity. Easy CD Creator, in an attempt to prevent you frommaking mistakes, will refuse to allow you to write more than you should beable to. CDRWIN will warn you that the write may fail, but will allow youto continue anyway. Nero has a preference (under Expert Features) called'enable oversize disc' that allows the longer write. One approach to determining the maximum disc length is to gather a largecollection of audio tracks, and start writing. How To Overburn A CdEventually the recorderwill attempt to write past the end of the disc, and the write process willfail. Now play the disc, preferrably in a player that shows the totalelapsed time for the entire disc. When the music cuts off, make a note ofthe time. That's the absolute capacity of the disc. Most (all?) CD players will display the total disc time when you firstput the disc in. This value represents how much you tried to write, not how much was actually written. If you want to impress your friends, try to write 88 minutes of music. You won't get anywhere near that faron 74-minute media, but the CD player will show it.It should be possible to write a CD-ROM in the same manner as an audio CD,but the space would have to be calculated so that the write failureoccurred when the lead-out was being written. Otherwise, some of the filesthat appeared to be on the disc wouldn't actually exist.Recording in DAO mode may be helpful to ensure that the lead-in getswritten. Without a table of contents, the disc is useless. It's verylikely however that you will be able to finalize the disc even after thewrite fails.Depending on the disc and your player, you may have trouble seeking out totracks near the end of the disc. Also, your CD player may behave strangelywhen it walks off the end of the disc: one user said he had to open andclose the player afterward to convince it that a disc was still loaded. The disc surface past the end of the area reserved for the leadout may beunreliable. Overburn DvdAttempting to use more than 90 seconds (about 15MB of MODE-1data) beyond the rated capacity of a disc could be asking for trouble. It's possible to perform similar tricks on 80-minute media. Experimentswith TDK 80-minute discs resulted in a recorded length of 82:09. MMCrecorders don't seem to like having the lead-out position any later than88:29:74, but that shouldn't get in the way.Further commentary and instructions can be found atunder 'OverSize / OverBurn CD-Rs', includinga list of recorders that are known to work and step-by-step instructionsfor using popular software.Continue to:. prev:. next.
